ArcelorMittal Liberia Announces Scholarship Winners

Five young Liberians have been awarded the ArcelorMittal Liberia Advanced Studies Scholarship Programme, with three recipients starting their studies last month.
John Y. Hena, Maurice J. Davis, Samuel M. Nyema, Henry H. Manston and Alfred H. Wreh are the first recipients of the company’s scholarship programme which is designed to help young Liberian graduates obtain advanced degrees from accredited academic institutions. The five students received the award from Liberia’s education minister Tarpeh in a ceremony held in the capital Monrovia, in January.
Applicants were given the freedom to choose their university and the first wave of recipients chose Kenyatta and Jomo Kenyatta Universities in Nairobi, Kenya, China University of Petroleum in Beijing, China and University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The scholars will study for second degrees in subjects including applied analytical chemistry, procurement and logistics, chemical engineering, and environmental management.
ArcelorMittal Liberia launched its Advanced Studies Scholarship Programme in August 2012, in accordance with a provision of the Mineral Development Agreement between ArcelorMittal and the Government of Liberia. A total of US$200,000-worth of scholarships will be awarded annually for deserving Liberian students to pursue further studies in areas relating to mining, procurement and the environment.
