ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih Holds National Young Rollermen Contest

OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih recently hosted a national young rollermen contest in which teams of rollermen from four companies competed in terms of technology, safety and skills.
Four teams of rollermen took part in the contest, representing 4 companies: OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih; OJSC Enakievo Iron and Steel Plant; CJSC Makeevka Iron and Steel Plant; and OJSC Dnepropetrovsk Dzerzhinsky Iron and Steel Plant. Representatives of all competing enterprises were included in the jury.
“The main purpose of profession skill contest is communication between young specialists, the possibility to share their experience,” said Aleksandr Ioskov, Director for Production, OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih, who himself started his career in mill products. “The rollermen are the important players in metallurgical business and the participation in the contest helps the young generation to improve their skill and to further develop their career.”
Each team comprised a hot-roller, an operating pulpit technician and a manufacturing foreman. During the first (theoretical) part of the competition, participants gave written answers to eighteen questions on the technology of mill products, health and safety, and fire protection. During the practical part of the competition, the manufacturing foremen estimated the geometrical dimensions of the end products samples, while the operating pulpit technicians evaluated the speed rate of stand rotation and hot-rollers demonstrated their knowledge of the equipment by competing in fit-up and setting-up of the roll box and in dismantling and assemblage of the Margolis bearing.
“Our team is participating in this contest for the first time, and even though we didn’t win, we intend to participate in the contests again,” commented Nikolay Storublyov, Head of Rod Mill at CJSC Makeevka Iron and Steel Plant, and member of the jury. “We have learnt many new facts about Kryviy Rih enterprise its history, we had a tour on the main shops. The manufacturing areas have really impressed us. There is something to learn there and such a contest is the good way of sharing the best practice.”
The OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih team won the competition. Team members included Sergey Beliy, Chief Foreman of Light Section, Rod Mill No 6; Andrey Chaenkov, Operating Pulpit Technician for Blooming No 2; Aleksandr Syrovatka, Hot-Roller of Light Section Mill No 5. The CJSC Makeevka Iron and Steel Plant team took second place, and the OJSC Dnepropetrovsk Dzerzhinsky Iron and Steel Plant team was third.
The National young rollermen contest was held in the memory of Ion Rotaru, a legendary 43-year veteran of ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih and the Honored metallurgist of Ukraine. Among other accomplishments, Rotaru authored almost 100 innovation proposals and 12 inventions and trained several generations of rollermen. The company is planning to hold the contest annually, as a memorial to Rotaru. Young specialists not older than 35, both from Ukraine and other countries will be eligible to participate in the contest.
Ion Teodorovich Rotaru started his 43-year career as a hot metal shearer and reached the position of workshop chief. He headed the blooming shops No 1 and No 2, and developed cogging production. He was named Honored metallurgist of Ukraine, Honored worker of production sector of Ukraine, and Honored worker of “Kryvorizhstal” and was also the author of almost 100 innovation proposals and 12 inventions. He is remembered as a wise supervisor, who trained several generations of rollermen at OJSC ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih.
