ArcelorMittal Joins Cross-Industry Partnership Aimed at Lowering Carbon Emissions
11/17/2016 - ArcelorMittal and three other manufacturers have formed a partnership that will explore how the steel, chemicals and cement businesses could together reduce carbon dioxide emissions generated through operations, the steelmaker announced Thursday.
Dubbed the Low Carbon Technology Partnerships Initiative, it brings together chemicals manufacturers Evonik and Solvay and concrete producer LafargeHolcim. Along with ArcelorMittal, the four will study potential synergies in their manufacturing processes and how those synergies could yield lower emissions.
“The potential to reduce carbon emissions through better collaboration between the chemicals, steel and cement industries looks promising. European energy-intensive industries could, with new and innovative ways to work together ultimately produce large volumes of final goods with a reduced carbon footprint,” Michel Bande, Solvay’s corporate sustainability officer, said in a statement.
ArcelorMittal said the first step is to undertake a study that would identify some ways the industries could valorize industrial offgases and byproducts to produce goods with a lower carbon footprint.
“We are excited to build a partnership that demonstrates our commitment to developing a low-carbon, circular economy steel business and explores the numerous efficiency opportunities across other energy intensive industries,” said Carl de Maré, ArcelorMittal’s head of technology strategy.
