ArcelorMittal Introduces Door Ring Solution to European Car Manufacturers
06/13/2013 - ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks recently welcomed four of the main European carmakers at ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D research center in Montataire, France, to discover the door ring, a very interesting solution that is already in use in the U.S.
The door ring is a Laser Welded Blank (LWB) solution that uses Usibor® and Ductibor® steels to allow car manufacturers to design low weight bodyside structure reinforcement. The delegates of the car manufacturers were invited to attend three detailed presentations, respectively about the benefits of this concept, the manufacturing process of the ring shape Laser Welded Blanks and the hot stamping process of such a big part. This was the opportunity for in-depth discussion about the Usibor® LWB solutions, the hot stamping process, the simulation of this process and the application of the door ring design on new vehicles. These presentations were followed by laser welding and hot stamping demonstrations.
Some of the car makers showed keen interest for the door ring solution and are ready to start investigating the feasibility and the benefits in terms of technique and cost optimization.
