ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor Granted DOE Funding

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor funding for its No. 7 Blast Furnace Gas Flare Capture project.

ArcelorMittal says it is one of only nine organizations to be granted funding, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, for projects that promote the use of combined heat and power, district energy systems, waste energy recovery systems, and energy efficiency.

"ArcelorMittal is honored to be among the companies selected by the DOE to receive funding for energy efficiency projects, and our grant will support a vital project within the Indiana Harbor facility," said Michael Rippey, President and CEO, ArcelorMittal USA. "The energy saved from the Blast Furnace Gas Flare Capture project at our No. 7 Blast Furnace will be the equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power 30,000 households for a year."

The blast furnace project includes the installation of an efficient recovery boiler that uses waste blast furnace gas, generated during the ironmaking process, to produce electricity and steam onsite. Currently, 46 billion ft3 of blast furnace gas is flared annually. ArcelorMittal says that the project will save an estimated 3.66 trillion BTU annually from the waste gas—equivalent to removing 62,000 cars from the road.
