ArcelorMittal Galati Partners with Local Animal Shelter to Tackle Dog Problem at Mill
06/21/2013 - ArcelorMittal Galati is the first Romanian corporation that chose to invest to solve the problem of street dogs in a humane, decent way: Since 2007, the company and ROLDA, a local charity that rescues and provides care for stray dogs, have been working together to create a better life for these unwanted animals.
ArcelorMittal Galati’s plant in Romania was faced with what may be an uncommon problem for steel mills: the huge plant property on the outskirts of the Galati town became a “house” for thousands of street dogs which began to reproduce, live in packs, and threaten and/or attack employees and clients. Many were starving. Most of these dogs became wild, frightened, frail, weak, wounded and sickly.
ArcelorMittal Galati is the first Romanian corporation that chose to invest to solve the problem of street dogs in a humane, decent way: Since 2007, the company and ROLDA, a local charity that rescues and provides care for stray dogs, have been working together to create a better life for these unwanted animals. A huge dog center was created where dogs are sheltered, given quality care (veterinary assistance, 24 hour a day security from a professional company, only given good dry dog food, etc.).
ROLDA is in the process of improving the kennels and building running spaces for the sheltered dogs. In the fall of 2011, it built a charitable clinic where dogs are sterilized for free, given isolation and recovery services, provided long time care, and where discounted treatments are made available for the community.
ArcelorMittal’s action in the project is unique in Romania and perhaps unique in all of Europe, ROLDA says.
ROLDA started as a group of enthusiasts and animal lovers working hard to follow a dream, to fulfill the mission, to change the standards of animals care which are terrible, in 99.9% of Romanian shelters. Its mission is to save animals in need and provide quality care to each of them, based on respect and with responsibility. Every year, it rescues and provides daily care to about 600 dogs and re-home hundreds of other dogs with the help of donations, sponsorships and grants received from compassionate individuals, companies and international partners.
