ArcelorMittal Galati Achieves Second Consecutive Year with Zero Work Related Fatalities

ArcelorMittal Galati in Romania has achieved, for the first time in its history, the second consecutive year without recording any work related fatal accidents. In 2013 the company will continue and increase its efforts to improve the health and safety of the employees by way of various projects and an investment effort of approximately €8.5 Million in health and safety measures, including €1 Million for installing safe and modern scaffoldings.
"Although good results appear to continue, we are not satisfied yet with the level of sustainability. For instance, the number of lost time injuries accidents is still too high: 7 in 2012 as compared to 5 in 2011 among our own employees and 9 as compared to 7 among the contractors. Our goal can be achieved, it is crystal clear and constant: zero accidents,” said Bruno Ribo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Galati. "We are also really concerned that during the interventions to counter 4 attacks and attempted thefts, 7 external security guards have been injured."
In the past two years, the company has developed special SMART trainings for its employees and contractors to identify the risks of injury. A centralized system of observation, monitoring and reporting dangerous situations has also been developed. The number of such cases detected and resolved has increased by a third since 2011. It will continue to implement special projects such as: providing a financial bonus for compliance with the rules, the installation of "life lines" for working at heights, as well as LO/TO - a system of locking and labeling the stopped equipment in order to operate maintenance activities under the safest possible conditions.
ArcelorMittal Galati also improved personal protective equipment by testing and purchasing last generation products such as helmets with incorporated goggles for employees with eyesight problems or personal multi-gas detectors for hazardous areas. In addition to that, signaling, warning and firefighting facilities are being upgraded.
The company says it will continue its efforts to provide the best health and safety conditions to its workers and subcontractors: this is its top duty and will remain in 2013 its first priority.
