ArcelorMittal Donates to Sept-Iles Cegep

ArcelorMittal is contributing $800,000 for the construction of a new building wing devoted to metallurgy and technological transfer in industrial maintenance. The Sept-Îles Cegep announced that the new wing will be named the ArcelorMittal Institute of Mineral Technology.

The contribution is in addition to sums made public last April when investments totaling $7.3 million relative to this project were confirmed.

Preparation of plans and specifications is under way, and construction is expected to begin in August 2010 and end in March 2011.

The mineral technology program will be housed in the new wing and enhance the Cegep’s educational offering to better meet the mining industry's needs. The institution already offers programs in industrial maintenance technology and industrial electronics technology, as well as tailored-made intensive training programs in iron ore processing and for train conductors.

"The mining industry is a major driver for our regional economy, and it is showing very promising signs for the future," said Sept-Îles Cegep General Manager Donald Bherer. "In this context, the Cegep will have the assets needed to offer a wide range of courses covering all the training needs of the mining industry. Moreover, as we have been doing for certain other programs, we will also be able to welcome students from abroad wishing to acquire world-class training in metallurgy."

"This new wing focusing on mineral processing and industrial maintenance is a dynamic structuring project which has not only brought together a large number of partners within the community but also allows the Cegep to enhance the courses it offers in priority fields for all the mining industry," ArcelorMittal Mines Canada President and CEO Serge Miller said. "ArcelorMittal is therefore extremely proud to participate in the funding of this new infrastructure and to lend its name to the new institute."

The Sept-Îles Cegep is located on the North Shore of the St. Lawrence where Canadian iron ore production is concentrated and where there are major hydro-electrical dams and major aluminum plants. The Cegep is a post-secondary educational institution offering companies technical training services and technological transfer assistance in various fields, especially in industrial maintenance, industrial electronics, mineral processing, and in transportation by rail.
