ArcelorMittal has been declared gold class within the steel sector in the 2013 RobecoSAM Sustainability Yearbook, which was presented to the world’s financial, political and cultural leaders at the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos this week.
RobecoSAM, assessors of Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), included ArcelorMittal as the sector leader in their 2013 Sustainability Yearbook. Each year, the world’s largest 2,500 companies, are invited to participate in RobecoSAM’s — previously known only as SAM — Corporate Sustainability Assessment. The top-scoring 15% of the companies in each of the 58 sectors assessed are eligible for inclusion in the DJSI and likewise, “The Sustainability Yearbook".
Criteria used by RobecoSAM in the steel sector ranged from codes of conduct and environmental reporting to labor practice indicators and human rights.
The announcement comes after our company ranked first in the steel sector of the DJSI in September last year, at a score of 77% against a sector average of 44%.
The DJSI report identified several sector drivers for the industry, highlighting climate change and CO2 as two crucial challenges that steel companies must address: “one of the challenges faced by the iron and steel producing sector is the effective handling of CO2 constraints and climate change risks. Numerous steel companies are developing technologies to reduce the CO2 intensity of the steel making process.”
