ArcelorMittal Commits Additional US$30 Million to LanzaTech Carbon Capture Technology
12/14/2021 - ArcelorMittal, through its XCarb™ innovation fund, will invest US$30 million in carbon capture and utilization (CCU) company LanzaTech, according to an official press release.
The two companies have been working in partnership since 2015 on a €180 million carbon capture and reuse plant in Ghent, Belgium, which will employ LanzaTech technology to convert steelmaking waste gas into useable products such as bio-ethanol. The new plant is on track for a late 2022 start-up, ArcelorMittal said.
“We have worked with LanzaTech for several years, know their leadership team well and understand the potential of their technology and the role it can play in not only helping us to decarbonize, but also in producing valuable products from our carbon bearing gases which can help the decarbonization of other sectors,” commented ArcelorMittal’s chief technology officer Pinakin Chaubal. “Extending our relationship through this investment was therefore a natural next step and we are very pleased to now have an excellent CCU technology company within our XCarb innovation fund portfolio.”
