ArcelorMittal Brings Low-CO2 Heavy Plate to Market
07/20/2023 - ArcelorMittal’s European division has begun producing low-CO2 heavy plates in weights of up to 18 metric tons, the company has announced.
According to ArcelorMittal, steel for the plates is melted from scrap at a Belgium electric arc furnace and slabs are then converted at its heavy plate mill in Asturias, Spain. It is the first European producer to make low-CO2 heavy plates at those weights, ArcelorMittal said.
“We are immensely proud to now be able to offer heavy plate to our customers, with a CO2 footprint reduction of around 60 percent compared with the same product made using the conventional primary steelmaking route,” said Denis Parein, ArcelorMittal’s commercial head of heavy plate Europe.
“Our teams have worked very hard to bring this product to market, which we know meets a growing customer need for low-carbon emissions steel, to reduce the carbon footprint of complex civil engineering projects.”
The company said it will offer environmental product declaration on the product by the end of the year.
