ArcelorMittal Brazil Plans 554-MW Wind Farm
04/18/2023 - ArcelorMittal Brazil is establishing a 55-45 joint venture that will develop an US$800 million wind farm that will provide more than one-third of the steelmaker’s electricity needs in the country.
In a statement, ArcelorMittal said it is partnering with Brazilian renewable power developer Casa dos Ventos on the project, which will produce 554 MW of electricity.
“As we expand our presence and add value to our Brazilian franchise we are conscious of the responsibility we have to decarbonize our operations. By collaborating with a respected energy transition operator in Casa dos Ventos, we can take advantage of the favorable Brazilian climate for renewable energy generation and make faster progress toward our climate targets,” said ArcelorMittal chief executive Aditya Mittal.
The wind farm is to be built in the central region of Bahia, in northeast Brazil. ArcelorMittal said the site has high wind capacity and is close to the national electricity grid.
“There is also the potential to expand the capacity of the project by adding a further 100 MW of solar power,” it said.
The permitting process is underway, and the construction is to start later this year. Commissioning is set for 2025. ArcelorMittal Brazil would buy electricity from the joint venture under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
