ArcelorMittal Agrees to Continue Ilva Negotiations
12/20/2019 - ArcelorMittal and the Italian government have reached a non-binding agreement on a new path forward for the Ilva steel works and will continue to negotiate a new industrial plan, the company said Friday.
ArcelorMittal had planned to withdraw from its investment in Italy’s largest steel works after the government rescinded protections from criminal liabilities tied to environmental issues at the facility.
The government moved to stop ArcelorMittal’s withdrawal in court, and a hearing had been scheduled to take place Friday. But with the agreement, the hearing was postponed to allow for more time for negotiations.
ArcelorMittal said the negotiations include discussion about a substantial equity investment by a government-controlled entity.
“The new industrial plan would contemplate investments in green technology, including through a new company funded by public and private investors. Negotiations will continue into January,” ArcelorMittal said.
