ArcelorMittal Adding Products Through Tube Plant Expansion
09/25/2015 - ArcelorMittal is undertaking a US$11.1 million expansion of its Monterrey, Mexico, tube plant, allowing it to add to its product offerings for the North American automotive market, the company has announced.
As part of the investment, the company will build a fourth tube mill -- it currently has three -- and install new value-added processing equipment. The expansion will allow it to make high-quality straight and formed tubes for seats and headrests, it said.
“ArcelorMittal has enjoyed a strong position in supplying tubes to the Mexico region since 2000,” said ArcelorMittal Tubular Products NAFTA CEO Ed Vore in a statement.
“This latest investment in new equipment and our people is consistent with ArcelorMittal’s aim to further grow our footprint and leadership position in the automotive sector – a market that continues to show remarkable growth, both in Mexico and the southeastern United States.”
Construction already has started and is to be completed by the spring of 2016. The new mill will make electric resistance welded (ERW) tubes ranging from 11 mm to 165 mm from a variety of sheet thicknesses and grades, including advanced, high-strength grades.
ArcelorMittal said the expansion will add to the plant’s product portfolio, which includes hydroformed tubes, driveshafts, rectangular tube, rounds and specialized shapes.
The plant has cold-sizing welding capabilities. It also offers bending, laser cutting and angle cutting.
