ArcelorMittal, for instance, has announced that it will take the Indiana Harbor No. 4 blast furnace in Indiana, USA, off-line as well as the  No. 3 blast furnace at its Dofasco plant in Ontario, Canada.  

"The COVID-19 outbreak has impacted ArcelorMittal USA’s key use markets. In response to this, we are adapting our capacity to meet changing demand while maintaining the flexibility of our operations," ArcelorMittal spokesman William Steers told The Times newspaper of northwest Indiana. 

Gerdau, too, announced that it is shutting its special steel operations following the automotive announcements. 

"Shipments to our customers are being maintained according to their needs,” the company said in a statement.  
Gerdau said it has also halted operations in Peru and Argentina following emergency actions taken by their governments. In Brazil, some operations are closed due to specific local restrictions

Shipments have been maintained, respecting the restrictions in place for the moment,” the company said. 

“Besides those measures and focusing on minimizing the movement of people not essential for the production process at our mills, and considering market uncertainties, the global capex plan for 2020 is being carefully postponed. This includes on-going investments and the ones planned to be approved throughout the year,” it added.
