ArcelorMittal and Gansu provincial government recently celebrated the successful reconstruction of Xinhuamen Primary School, which was destroyed by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
The ArcelorMittal Foundation, in cooperation with the Gansu and Luxembourg government, supported rebuilding of the school. The new steel building is said to offer a high degree of earthquake resistance.
An enhanced learning environment is provided through efficient layout, low height for safety, energy savings, and improved comfort through proper insulation, maximized daylight and natural ventilation, and efficient shading.
The building also incorporates so-called “green” systems, including a solar collector for hot water, a rainwater collection system for irrigation, and a more durable roof that reduces inside temperature.
“Xinhuamen Primary School is an excellent example of how steel contributes to sustainable construction in post-earthquake reconstruction activities,” Daniel Deng, Country Manager of ArcelorMittal China, said at the inauguration ceremony. “We hope the students will benefit from a good learning environment for a successful start of the new school year.”
