April Steel Shipments Down 5.2% from Previous Month

U.S. steel mills shipped 8,849,000 net tons of steel in April 2007 according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The April total reflects a 3.4% decrease from the 9,159,000 net tons shipped in April 2006, and a 5.2% decrease from the 9,331,000 net tons shipped in the previous month (March 2007).
Within major market classifications, year-to-date shipments (as compared to YTD 2006) exhibited the following major changes:
- Service centers and distributors, -7.3%
- Automotive, -3.2%
- Construction and contractors’ products, -1.1%
- Oil and gas, -9.8%
