API Steel Pipe Factory Completed in Pittsburg

Posco recently completed construction of an annual 270,000-tonne scale API (American Petroleum Institute) steel pipe factory in Pittsburg, Calif.

United Spiral Pipe, LLC (USP), established jointly with U.S. Steel and Seah Steel, will manufacture and sell high-quality API-certified steel pipes designed for energy transportation.

The USP factory is said to have the most up-to-date equipment to produce large-diameter steel pipes of 24-64 inches. The hot-rolled steel sheets necessary for API steel pipe production will be provided 50/50 by Posco and U.S. Steel.

Posco and U.S. Steel each hold 35% of the company’s shares, while Seah Steel holds 30%.

Chairman Joon-yang Chung, CEO John P. Surma of U.S. Steel, Chairman Wun-hyeong Lee of Seah Steel, Congressman George Miller, Pittsburg Mayor Nancy Parent, and Consul General Bon-wu Gu of San Francisco joined about 200 personnel at the completion ceremony.

“The U.S. is the largest market in steel pipes for energy transportation, and we expect the demand in the North America region to increase,” said Chung. “We hope that USP, Posco’s first investment in the high-quality API steel pipe sector, meets clients’ needs in North America, and ask for efforts to grow together with clients.”
