ANDRITZ to Outfit US$230M Cold Mill Complex
03/29/2017 - ANDRITZ has won a contract to equip the specialty cold mill Nucor Corp. is planning to build at its Hickman, Ark., sheet plant.
The order includes a cold reduction mill outfitted with ANDRITZ’s S6-high technology and a 4-high temper mill, both of which can operate at rolling speeds of 800 m/min and can handle third-generation, advanced high-strength steels of up to 2,000 MPa.
The order also includes a push pickling line with multiroll leveler and a 4-high skinpass mill. The pickling line will be able to operate at speeds of up to 200 m/minute.
“All rolling units, which are operated with state-of-the-art ANDRITZ in-house electrics and automation, are equipped with equally fast and automated roll change equipment, integrated bridle rolls, advanced strip drying, and gauge controls to ensure the tightest tolerances,” ANDRITZ said in a statement.
Nucor announced the US$230 million expansion in September 2016, saying that it would enable production of advanced high-strength steels; high-strength, low-alloy steels; and motor lamination steels. The complex is targeting 650,000 tons of production annually.
“The specialty cold mill complex will give Nucor the capability to produce products the company currently does not make, adding to Nucor's comprehensive product portfolio and further differentiating Nucor from its competitors as the leader in providing solutions to its customers,” Nucor officials said at the time they announced the project.
Start-up is scheduled for the second half of 2018.
