An Uplifting Order: Algoma Receiving Six Cranes as Part of EAF Installation

Four of the cranes will be installed in an automated scrap yard, and the remaining two will service the meltshop. The meltshop cranes are 31.5 m wide and will support a dual-furnace operation. The cranes also have the capacity to lift the top and bottom furnace shells in one lift, providing for quicker turnaround time on monthly furnace rebuilds.

“They are beautiful cranes. The welds were beautiful, just incredible machines,” said Tom MacMillan, a member of the Algoma engineering team that recently traveled to a Danieli workshop in Thailand to inspect the meltshop cranes and conduct extensive factory acceptance testing.

Of the four scrapyard cranes, one has been inspected.

They will be equipped with scanning technology that makes it possible to check for any undesirable type of material within the scrap before the transfer into the scrap bucket, Danieli said.

Algoma’s CA$700 million EAF installation is set for completion in 2024. Danieli is supplying the furnaces and other ancillary equipment for the project.
