AMM Announces Twelve Winners of 2013 Awards for Steel Excellence
07/11/2013 - Twelve companies and a veteran steel executive were named winners of American Metal Market’s 2013 Awards for Steel Excellence at a special ceremony and dinner honoring the pioneering efforts of movers and shakers, who have brought real change to the steel supply chain.
AMM’s annual Steel Excellence Awards, now in their fourth year, recognize the contributions of industry participants in twelve distinct categories. This year’s winners were evaluated and elected by an independent judging panel from a pool of 42 finalists.
“The 2013 Steel Excellence Awards program drew an unprecedented number of nominations from virtually every segment of the steel supply chain,” David Brooks, senior vice president, publisher and editor in chief of American Metal Market, commented on the breadth of the competition. “This year’s winners join a select group of trailblazers, whose ideas, energy and grit have combined to ensure a competitive future for steel.”
Winners of AMM’s 2013 Awards for Steel Excellence are:
Mesocoat, Inc., Best Innovation/Process, for its CermaClad clad pipe manufacturing technology.
ArcelorMittal USA LLC., Best Innovation/Product, for joint-engineering with Ford Motor Co. the use of hydroformed DP980/550 cold-rolled, dual-phase steel in the 2013 Ford Fusion.
AK Steel Corp., Best Merger and Acquisition, for its strategic investments in iron ore and metallurgical coke in the form of Magnetation LLC and AK Coal Resources.
Evraz North America Inc., Best Operational Improvement, for ongoing investments to increase capacity and improve quality at its rail, seamless pipe and rod and bar mill in Pueblo, Colorado.
Independence Tube Corp., Tube and Pipe Producer of the Year, for the fast-track rebuild of its 435,000 square-foot, Decatur, Alabama facility, which was 90-percent destroyed by a tornado.
OMK Tube North America Inc., Best Brownfield/Greenfield Technology, for its record-fast design and construction of a new OCTG and line pipe mill in Houston, Texas.
Sims Metal Management Ltd., Environmental Responsibility/Stewardship, for its long-time commitment and public disclosure on sustainability and relentless focus on the company’s energy and carbon footprint, water usage and waste generation.
Thomas A. Danjczek, Industry Ambassador/Advocate of the Year, for his guidance and lending a strong and effective voice in Washington and around the United States to causes pivotal to the health and future of scrap-based electric furnace steelmakers and steel rerollers.
Norfolk Southern Corp., Logistics/Transportation Provider of the Year, for implementation of its Thoroughbred Operating Plan (TOP), which uses streamlined scheduling to provide a more fluid and efficient rail network.
Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc., Scrap Company of the Year, for remaining profitable in a year marked by steep challenges through aggressive but smart cost-cutting and targeting new initiatives to enhance synergies between its metals recycling and auto parts businesses.
O’Neal Steel Inc., Service Center of the Year, for continuously improving and maintaining a high level of performance across its operations, quality, customer-service, on-time delivery and employee-safety fronts.
Nucor Corp., Steel Producer of the Year, for demonstrating excellence across its’ broad operations, technology and customer service fronts and steadfastly adhering to a core philosophy that the key to achieving commercial excellence is to work together as one company.
Scrap Metal Services LLC, Ferrous Scrap Exporter of the Year, for its acquisition of ship recycling company All Star Metals and planned expansion into the Mexican market.
