AM/NS India JV Plans US$5 Billion Investment to Boost Capacity
09/29/2022 - The planned investment, which will include two new blast furnaces, is expected to increase crude steel capacity by 6 million metric tons per year at the Hazira facility, according to the Reuters news agency.
AM/NS India is a joint venture between Nippon Steel and ArcelorMittal. The expansion will bring the Hazira plant’s annual production capacity to around 15 million metric tons.
According to Reuters, AM/NS India is also considering building a new steel plant in eastern India while further expanding the Hazira plant beyond 15 million metric tons.
“To secure a good presence, we want to win about 15% share in the Indian market where an annual crude steel output is expected to grow to around 200 million metric tons by 2030,” Takahiro Mori, executive vice president at Nippon Steel said at a news conference.
“Therefore, we want to bolster AM/NS India’s output capacity to around 30 million metric tons by 2030,” he said.
