AM/NS Calvert Announces New President for Acquired Facility
03/25/2014 - Joint venture partners ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) announced the recent appointment of Chris Richards to president of the newly created AM/NS Calvert, a state-of-the-art carbon steel processing facility in Calvert, Ala.
Formerly ThyssenKrupp Steel USA, ArcelorMittal and NSSMC acquired the facility from ThyssenKrupp AG in February 2014 through a 50/50 investment.
Reporting to and serving on a joint venture managing board, Richards will oversee all areas of operations at the facility which has a capacity of producing 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades including hot rolled bands, hot rolled pickled and oiled, cold rolled, and advanced coated products for the automotive, pipe and tube, appliance/HVAC, service center and construction industries in the NAFTA market.
Since 2006, Richards served as president of I/N Tek and I/N Kote, highly successful ArcelorMittal and NSSMC steel processing joint ventures located in New Carlisle, Ind. From 1989 to 2006 he held positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of operations, quality assurance, process technology, logistics and customer service at Bethlehem Steel’s Lackawanna, N.Y., facility. Richards has a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering from the University of Idaho and an MBA from St. Bonaventure University. He and his wife Roamie have three children and will reside in the Mobile area.
“The facility in Calvert is recognized by the global steel industry as one of the most advanced of its kind in the world, and I consider it an honor to have this opportunity to lead its operations and team members in setting new standards in safety, quality, innovation and customer service,” said Richards. “My family and I are also looking forward to experiencing the area’s famed southern hospitality which is already being warmly extended us.”
