Allegheny Technologies JV Orders New Cold Mill to Make Super Thin and Very Wide Strip
06/15/2016 - Shanghai STAL Precision Stainless Steel Co. Ltd. has awarded a contract to the Fives industrial engineering group for a cold rolling mill capable of rolling ultra-thin stainless strip at full commercial widths, the company has announced.
According to Fives, the mill will be capable of rolling 1.5 mm strips down to a finished dimension of 0.04 mm. But the mill’s stand-out feature will be its ability to roll strips at that gauge in widths up to 1,250 mm.
“The design of the mill, (which) combines ultra-thin (gauges) at a full width, is currently unique in the world,” the firm said in a statement.
The finished strips will be used in electronics, such as smartphones and tablet computers.
The Fives said the 20-high mill will be capable of making a bit more than 80,000 metric tons per year. The mill equipment will be manufactured by the Fives’ subsidiary in China.
Shanghai STAL is a joint venture between U.S.-based Allegheny Technologies Inc. and China’s Baosteel Group. It specializes in manufacturing precision-rolled stainless strip.
