All Four Metal Recycling Services’ Facilities Receive Safety Award

This places MRS in a select group of businesses and public agencies in North Carolina.  This is the second year in a row that Monroe, Marion, and Whiteville were recognized for their safety record; it is the first year for Gastonia.  Each facility was awarded the North Carolina Department of Labor (NDOL)’s Gold level Certificate of Safety Achievement, the state’s highest safety award.  The awards were presented by North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry, in recognition of each MRS recycling location’s outstanding safety and health efforts and the promotion of safe working conditions in 2013.

This annual awards program, run by the NCDOL, recognizes companies that strive to excel in safety. In order to qualify for the Gold award, each company must have ten or more full time employees, must have had no lost time accidents and also must have achieved incident rates 50% below their NAICS code.

“We are honored to receive these awards from the North Carolina Department of Labor in recognition of our commitment to safety,” said Bob Eviston, president of MRS.  “Safety is recognized and promoted as a core value at MRS.  Active participation throughout all levels of the organization is key to the success of our safety process and we continue to explore new ways to improve safety in our plants.   Congratulations to all the MRS teammates on receiving these important NCDOL awards.”

Metal Recycling Services operates four scrap recycling facilities in North Carolina: Gastonia, Marion, Monroe and Whiteville. MRS recycling facilities include two automobile shredders, balers, shears, mobile shearing, torch processing, auto crushers, and an extensive truck and railcar fleet.  MRS has nearly 125 employees.  The MRS recycling centers buy ferrous scrap and automobiles as well as common household nonferrous scrap metal items like aluminum cans and other aluminum, stainless steel, copper and brass products. MRS is wholly owned by The David J. Joseph Company (DJJ).  Founded in 1885, DJJ is one of the largest scrap brokers/processors in the United States providing scrap brokerage, recycling and transportation services.  DJJ is part of Nucor Corporation’s family of companies.  Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nucor is the leading purchaser of ferrous scrap and the largest recycler in North America, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada.
