Algoma Steel Reaches Tentative Agreement with Salaried Employees
07/27/2007 - Algoma Steel reaches tentative agreement with United Steelworker Local 2724, the bargaining unit for its salaried employees; no agreement has yet been reached with the larger Local 2251, which covers 2714 union members.
Algoma Steel Inc. has reached a tentative agreement with United Steelworker Local 2724, the bargaining unit for its salaried employees.
The union’s current contract expires July 31. Earlier in July, the members of Local 2724, which represents 586 salaried employees, had voted to strike if necessary in order to reach a contract settlement.
No agreement has yet been reached with Local 2251, which represents 2714 Algoma employees. The current collective agreement for Local 2251 also expires on July 31, 2007.
A member of the Essar Group, Algoma Steel Inc. is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. As a fully integrated steel producer, Algoma's revenues are derived primarily from the manufacture and sale of rolled steel products, including hot and cold rolled sheet and plate.
