Alacero Forecasts Sees Steel Consumption on the Rise in 2017
10/27/2016 - Latin America’s steel consumption is expected to drop 6.5% this year, but is forecast to partially rebound in 2017 on growth in its major markets, according to the Latin American Steel Association.
According to association president Jefferson de Paula, chief executive of ArcelorMittal’s Central and South American long products unit, and Alacero general director Rafael Rubio, the growth in consumption will be due to improving demand in Mexico, Brazil Argentina and Columbia.
In those countries, demand is projected to rise between 3.2% and 5.8%.
While the Brazilian economy is mired in recession, the organization said it has a positive outlook for 2017.
“Numbers for this year are encouraging with strong signs that the worst is past and that Brazil is now on a steady pace towards recovery of losses,” the organization said.
