Alabama Environmental Agency to Fine ThyssenKrupp Steel USA
08/15/2012 - The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is proposing to issue a fine to ThyssenKrupp Steel USA for several safety violations.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Alabama Environmental Management Act, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is proposing to issue a Consent Order to ThyssenKrupp Steel USA LLC, the owner and operator of a steel mill located at 1 ThyssenKrupp Drive, Calvert, Mobile County, Ala.
The violations consisted of failure to do the following: keep closed a container of used oil, mark two containers of used oil with the words "Used Oil", maintain a written hazardous waste (HW) minimization plan, mark HW containers with an accumulation start date, mark HW containers with the words "hazardous waste" and the EPA hazardous waste numbers, include the time of the inspections in the weekly inspections records, conduct weekly inspections of HW container storage area, keep closed a satellite accumulation area (SAA) container, mark a SAA container with the words "hazardous waste", post security/warning signs at a HW container storage area, control entry to a HW container storage area, include the home addresses of the emergency coordinators in the contingency plan, and obtain a hazardous waste facility storage permit.
The Department is proposing a civil penalty in the amount of $15,000.00. The Order, if issued, would require ThyssenKrupp Steel USA LLC to comply with the terms, limitations, and conditions of Department’s regulations.
