AK Tube Plants Recognized for Safety Performance

The Columbus, Ind., and Walbridge, Ohio, plants of AK Tube LLC have each received the "Safety Award of Merit" from the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), a leading trade organization that serves the metal forming and fabricating industry.
 
With a total OSHA recordable injury rate of 0.69 for the full-year 2011, the safety performance for AK Tube in Columbus was nearly nine times better than the rolled steel shape manufacturing industry average, according to the company. The operation is now a three-time recipient of the FMA's "Safety Award of Merit," as well as a three-time prior recipient of the FMA's "Safety Award of Honor." The plant is also a certified Star site in the Indiana Department of Labor's Voluntary Protection Program.
 
AK Tube in Walbridge had a total OSHA recordable injury rate of 0.63 for the full-year 2011, about 9.5 times better than the industry average. The plant is now a four-time recipient of the FMA's "Safety Award of Merit."
 
All FMA safety award winners were selected by a committee sponsored by CNA Insurance Group. Calculations were performed using data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
 
AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless, and electrical steels, primarily for automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets. The company employs about 6200 men and women in Middletown, Mansfield, Coshocton, and Zanesville, Ohio; Butler, Pa.; Ashland, Ky.; Rockport, Ind.; and its corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio.
 
AK Tube LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of AK Steel, employs about 300 men and women in plants in Walbridge, Ohio, and Columbus, Ind. AK Tube produces carbon and stainless electric resistance welded (ERW) tubular steel products for truck, automotive, and other markets.
 
AK Coal Resources, Inc., another wholly owned subsidiary of AK Steel, owns or leases metallurgical coal reserves in Somerset County, Pa. AK Steel also owns 49.9% of Magnetation LLC, a joint venture headquartered in Grand Rapids, Minn., which produces iron ore concentrate from previously mined ore reserves.
