AK Steel Coke Plants Recognized for Outstanding Safety Performance

AK Steel Corp.'s Ashland, Ky., and Middletown, Ohio, coke plants have received the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI).

"AK Steel is honored to be recognized by the ACCCI – an achievement that reflects the company's commitment to safety at all of our manufacturing operations," said James L. Wainscott, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel.

The company received the awards in recognition for operating two of the safest coke-making facilities in America during 2010. Both AK Steel coke plants, along with one other ACCCI member coke facility, operated the entire year of 2010 without any OSHA recordable injuries.

"We congratulate everyone at our Ashland and Middletown coke plants, as well as all those affiliated with our fellow Max Eward award winner, for their outstanding safety performance," added Wainscott.

The ACCCI recognition marks the 13th time in the past 14 years that an AK Steel coke plant has received the Max Eward Safety Award.

"The employees at AK Steel's coke plants continue to be role models for safety in the workplace," said Bruce Steiner, President of the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute.  "We congratulate them, and the company, for promoting a culture of safety that continues to produce exceptional results."

In addition to AK Steel's coke plants, employees at the company's Ashland steel plant and AK Tube facility in Columbus, Ind., also worked the entire year of 2010 without any OSHA recordable injuries.
