AIST Presents Awards at MS&T’11 Annual Conference
10/21/2011 - AIST presented this week the prestigious Richard J. Fruehan Award, Gilbert R. Speich Award, Jerry Silver Award and Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture Award during the Steel Properties & Applications Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
AIST presented this week the prestigious Richard J. Fruehan Award, Gilbert R. Speich Award, Jerry Silver Award and Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture Award during the Steel Properties & Applications Conference. The conference took place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with the Materials Science & Technology 2011 Conference & Exhibition.
The Richard J. Fruehan Award was established in 2005 to honor Dr. Richard J. Fruehan, a devoted teacher and outstanding scientist, for his dedication to his students, the association and the steel industry. The award is presented to the author of a process metallurgy technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee.
The 2011 Richard J. Fruehan Award recipients are Myra S. Dyer, John G. Speer and David K. Matlock from Colorado School of Mines; Adam J. Shutts from Nucor Steel – Arkansas, Steven G. Jansto from Reference Metals Co.; and Kun Xu and Brian G. Thomas from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for their paper entitled, “Microalloy Precipitation in Hot Charged Slabs.”
The Gilbert R. Speich Award was established in 1992 to honor Gilbert R. Speich for his contributions to the field of ferrous physical metallurgy. The award is presented to the author of a physical metallurgy technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee.
The 2011 Gilbert R. Speich Award recipients are Rashmi R. Mohanty and Olga A. Girina from ArcelorMittal USA Research & Development for their paper entitled, “Effect of Heating Rate on the Kinetics of Austenite Formation in Low-Carbon High-Strength Steels Annealed in the Intercritical Region.”
The Jerry Silver Award was established in 1991 to honor Jerry Silver for his leadership in the development of student affairs and programs. The award is presented to the author of a process metallurgy or product applications technical paper judged to be the best of class by the AIST Metallurgy — Processing, Products and Applications Technology Committee. One of the authors must be a student.
The 2011 Jerry Silver Award recipients are Robert Pierer and Christian Bernhard from University of Leoben for their paper entitled, “The Nature of Internal Defects in Continuously Cast Steel and Their Impact of Final Product Quality.”
The Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture Award was established in 2010 to honor Adolf Martens, a pioneer in establishing structure-property relationships in steel and one of the first researchers to utilize optical microscopy to observe that hard steels have different features than soft steels at the micro scale. The award recognizes significant technical accomplishments or a lifetime of notable contributions in ferrous physical metallurgy processing and product applications. The recipient will present an honorary lecture on a subject of particular interest to the association during the annual AIST Steel Properties & Applications Conference.
The 2011 recipient of the Adolf Martens Memorial Steel Lecture Award is Bruce L. Bramfitt from ArcelorMittal Steelton. Dr. Bramfitt’s interests have centered on ferrous physical metallurgy, with a particular emphasis on the interrelationship of composition and microstructure on both physical and mechanical properties of steels and cast irons. He received B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Missouri–Rolla. He holds eight U.S. patents, has published more than 60 technical papers and handbook chapters, edited five conference proceedings and has been granted numerous awards, including ASM Fellow, Distinguished Member of the Iron & Steel Society (ISS), the Tenenbaum Award (ISS), the C.D. Moore Award (ISS) and Engineer of the Year Award (Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers).
In addition to the awards listed above, the recipients of the AIST Association-Level Awards, AIST Technology Division–Level Awards, AIST Member Chapter Awards and AIME Awards will be announced at the President’s Award Breakfast during AISTech 2012 — The Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition on Tuesday, 8 May 2012, at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, Ga.
