AIST Mourns Passing of Former AISE Managing Director Lawrence G. Maloney
12/12/2024 - Lawrence “Larry” G. Maloney, an engineer who led one of the two organizations that gave rise to the Association for Iron & Steel Technology, died 16 November at the age of 94.
Maloney was the seventh managing director for the Pittsburgh-based Association of Iron and Steel Engineers (AISE) and oversaw the organization from 1991 until his retirement in 2002. AISE merged with the Iron & Steel Society in 2004 to form AIST.
“Larry was the quintessential engineer who proudly represented the steel industry and AISE throughout his career. Hs legacy remains with AIST to this day," said AIST executive director Ron Ashburn.
According to Maloney's family, he was a firm believer in training and education, and collaborated with several universities, including Purdue University Calumet Campus, McMaster University of Ontario, University of Alabama Birmingham, and University of Michigan, to advance training and development in his field.
Maloney graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, which he put to work by helping to design and construct steel mills, chemical plants and lime facilities.
Maloney also had 17 years of experience in marketing and sales of engineering and construction services to the metals industry, serving as director of business development for MK-Ferguson. He also held positions with DuPont, Marblehead Lime, Davy McKee, Rust International and Inland Steel. During his 12 years at Inland Steel, Maloney received eight patents related to the ironmaking process.
Maloney was an AIST Life Member, and each year, AIST’s Pittsburgh Member Chapter awards a scholarship in his honor.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. His family has asked that donations be made in Larry's memory to a charity of one's choice.
