AIST Hosts Italy Forum Focusing on Economy, Energy and Environment

The Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) will highlight important issues for today’s steel industry during a one-day forum at the Pomini Tenova Conference Center in Castellanza, Italy, on 18 October 2012. The event will benefit individuals involved in the production and processing of iron and steel in Italy and the surrounding region. The AIST Italy Steel Forum is intended to complement regional steel programming, while fulfilling AIST’s mission to advance steel technology through education and the creation of important peer networks for our industry.

The program will feature an Industry Leader Town Hall Forum in which corporate executives will debate the key business issues impacting the global steel industry. The moderated discussion, with a question-and-answer period for the audience, will allow the panelists to bring their varied experience to wide-ranging topics influencing the steel industry today, tomorrow and beyond. Panelists include: George Babcoke, senior vice president — Europe and global operations, United States Steel Corporation; Ludovit Gajdos, president, Commercial Metals Company Europe; Doug Jellison, vice president and general manager — international business, Nucor; and Dmitrij Šcuka, chief executive officer, EVRAZ Europe. The moderator is Enrico Romagna Manoja, economic editor, Il Mondo. A keynote presentation on environment and climate affairs impacting the steel industry will follow the Industry Leader Town Hall Forum.

The program also includes an EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) Expert Panel involving operators from the world’s leading mini-mills. The panelists will share an overview of corporate EAF capacity and technology platforms, followed by a discussion of their environmental vision and policy regarding energy mandates and the impact of these issues on equipment design and operational efficiency. The participants include: Harriet Dutka, site manager, Charter Steel–Cleveland; Stephan Ferenczy, casting manager, Steel Dynamics Inc.; Jeremy Jones, vice president — corporate development, Transfield Services; Eugene Pretorius, manager — steelmaking technologies, Nucor Steel–Berkeley; and moderator, Francesco Memoli, vice president, Tenova Core.
