AIST Foundation Establishes New Research Grant

"While it has been gratifying to see the increasing number of AIST scholarship applications from mechanical engineering, metallurgy and materials science students, there has been markedly less interest from electrical engineering undergraduates. Electrical engineers are vital to the future success of the steel industry," said AIST Foundation President Steven S. Hansen. Hansen also is vice president and chief technical officer for SSAB Americas.

"This new program is intended to heighten the profile of the industry and its career opportunities with electrical engineering faculty and students," he said.

The grant asks university teams to draft a proposal addressing an electrical challenge within the steelmaking industry.
Grant proposals will be accepted between 1 December 2015 and 30 June 2016.

The winning team will receive a one-year award of US$10,000, which will be granted to qualified university professors in the beginning of September 2016.
