AIST Announces T.C. Graham Prize Semi-Finalists

This unique contest recognizes innovative applications for steel that may lead to the development of new markets. The winning entry will receive US$20,000.

The semi-finalists include:

  • Elisa Cantergiani, Ben Lawrence, Colin Scott and Chad Sinclair, High-Strength, Interstitial-Free Steel Obtained Using FeC Amorphous Films and Induction Heating for Packaging Applications and Cladding With Lighter Metals for Auto Body Panels

  • V.M. Kravchenko, A.V. Loza and D.A. Rassokhin, Local Doping Method With Differentiated Properties for the Production of Body Parts for Heavy Equipment
  • Cheng-Chieh Li, L.L. Liao, C.R. Kao and G.J. Snyder, Innovative Application of Thermoelectric Generators With Fe-Based Bonding Layers for Recovering Industrial and Automobile Waste Heat Into Renewable Energy

Semi-finalists will submit additional information that will narrow the list to five finalists. In September 2015, finalists will deliver oral presentations for the Contest Jury. The winner will be announced in the fall of 2015.

T.C. Graham Prize entries were accepted from any individual or group of individuals, and judged for innovation, practical application, performance and marketability. Sustainability initiatives relative to profitability, energy intensity, safety, environmental impact and overall life-cycle assessment were also evaluated.

The T.C. Graham Fund for Innovation in Steel Applications was established in April 2014 with a donation to the Association for Iron & Steel Technology by Mr. Thomas C. Graham Sr. Mr. Graham, a former president of the U. S. Steel Group of USX Corp., is widely known as one the steel industry's most successful and innovative executives.
