AISI Welcomes ThyssenKrupp Steel USA as New Member

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Board of Directors welcomed ThyssenKrupp Steel USA as a producer member during its quarterly meeting held February 3 in Washington, D.C.

The company’s Calvert, Ala., plant, which has been under development since 2007, will have the annual capacity to produce 4.7 million tons of carbon steel coiled product once it is fully operational.

“As Chairman of AISI, I’m pleased to welcome ThyssenKrupp Steel USA President and CEO Christoph Lackinger to the AISI Board of Directors and to extend that welcome to all the employees of ThyssenKrupp Steel USA,” said AISI Chairman Daniel R. DiMicco, who is Chairman and CEO of Nucor Corp. “As our industry advances its pro-manufacturing strategy, having a unified voice and presence throughout the country is a tremendous asset to the progress of our public policy agenda.”

“It is a pleasure to welcome Christoph Lackinger to the AISI Board of Directors,” said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson. “ThyssenKrupp Steel USA is part of the global technology parent company, ThyssenKrupp, and as such, brings its long-established reputation for quality performance, to its North American presence. We are pleased that ThyssenKrupp Steel USA is joining the Institute as we work steadily to influence public policy and to educate and shape public opinion in support of a strong, sustainable North American steel industry.”

“We are pleased at the opportunity to join the work of AISI,” commented Lackinger. “In Alabama, we have combined ThyssenKrupp’s nearly two-hundred-year-old metallurgical expertise and technical support with a new state-of-the-art facility to produce a high quality American product. We look forward to adding our voice to AISI’s efforts to strengthen the North American steel industry as a leader in the global marketplace,” Lackinger said.

Gibson said ThyssenKrupp USA joins the Institute as AISI embarks on intensive efforts to inform the tremendous number of new Members of the 112th Congress of the industry’s top policy priorities and of its impressive environmental achievements. He said that AISI is focused on advocating for policies to expand the competitiveness of the domestic steel industry, including the need to develop a range of sustainable domestic energy sources, better trade enforcement and infrastructure investment, with particular focus on upgrading America’s highways and bridges.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 140 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
