AISI Praises House Passage of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) praised the House passage of H.R. 3246, the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009, which supports research, development, demonstration and commercialization of vehicle technologies that reduce the use of vehicle fuels that generate high emissions.

“AISI would like to thank Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) for introducing H.R. 3246 and for all of those who cosponsored the bill,” said AISI President and CEO Thomas J. Gibson. “The rapid growth of advanced high-strength steels in vehicles since 2002 can be attributed, in part, to collaboration between AISI steel companies and the U.S. car companies through the Auto/Steel Partnership, in conjunction with the DOE. These new advanced high-strength steels have made today’s vehicles more fuel efficient and safe.

The H.R. 3246 bill would authorize appropriations totaling $2.85 billion over the Fiscal Year (FY) 2010-2014 period for the Department of Energy (DOE) to research, develop, demonstrate and commercialize vehicle technologies that reduce the use of vehicle fuels that generate high emissions.

“The continued DOE support of combined steel-automotive collaborative research in H.R. 3246 will enable the steel industry to continue to contribute to improved safety and fuel economy in vehicles for years to come,” concluded Gibson.
