AISI: Overall U.S. Steel Imports Down, But Finished Steel Imports Up in '22
01/27/2023 - The amount of imported steel entering the U.S. declined 2% in 2022, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Citing preliminary Census Bureau data, AISI said the U.S. imported 30.8 million tons of finished and semi-finished steel during 2022, down from 31.5 million tons in the year prior. However, finished steel imports rose 10.9% to 25.2 million tons. In 2021, the U.S. imported 22.8 million tons of finished steel.
Most of the imported steel came from three places – Canada, Mexico and the European Union, which together accounted for about 54% of total steel imports in 2022. Other major exporters to the U.S. included South Korea, Brazil, Japan, Taiwan and Turkey.
Imports from China rose 38.7% to 651,000 tons.
