AISI Names Recipients of Market Development Achievement Award

AISI’s Market Development Achievement Award recognizes the service of individuals within the North American steel industry who have made significant contributions in advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced the recipients of its Market Development Achievement Award.

This year’s awardees—Robert Johns of Nucor Corp. (retired) and Linn Osterman of The Timken Co. (retired)—were recognized during a ceremony held during AISI’s General Meeting in Henderson, Nev.

“We are pleased to recognize Bob and Linn, who have both provided leadership and strategic direction in promoting our objective to grow the markets for North American steel,” noted AISI Senior Vice President of Market Development David C. Jeanes. “Bob has been instrumental in moving our objectives forward through his chairmanship of the Construction Market Committee. Linn has chaired the Bar and Rod Market Development Group since it was formed in 1997, overseeing the development of advanced technologies for value-added bar and rod products that the automotive OEMs are now using to decrease weight and increase efficiency in powertrain and suspension systems.

“The leadership provided by these recipients has had a long-lasting effect in determining the strategic direction we have taken to increase the use of steel in the construction and automotive markets,” said Mr. Jeanes. “Their leadership has also resulted in increased interest by members of their respective companies in advancing steel’s competitive edge in these markets.”

Delbert F. Boring, 90
Vice President of Construction Market Development, said: “Bob Johns served as chairman of AISI’s Construction Market Committee during a period of unprecedented change. His knowledge of the breadth of steel construction products—from sheet to plate to long products—was invaluable in reshaping the AISI Construction Program to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Perhaps Bob’s greatest asset, however, was his ability to build consensus across product lines, between integrated producers and mini-mills, and U.S. & Canadian interests. His legacy is a strong AISI Construction Program that serves the interests of North American steel producers.”

Before his retirement in December 2006, Bob Johns was Director of Marketing for Nucor’s Sheet Mill Group. He joined Nucor as Sales Manager for Nucor-Yamato in 1988. Prior to that, he held sales, marketing and operations positions at Bethlehem Steel Corp. He was chairman of AISI’s Construction Market Committee from 2003-2006, and also served as a member of AISI’s Market Development Committee and Strategic Communications Council. He also represented Nucor on the public policy team. He served on several industry committees with the American Institute of Steel Construction, the Metals Service Center Institute and the Steel Manufacturers Association.

Linn B. Osterman’s award inscription reads: “In recognition of your significant contribution in advancing the applications of steel in Automotive market development.”

David Anderson, AISI’s Director of Bar and Rod Programs, said: “Linn’s vision for establishing steel as the material of choice for powertrain components and suspension systems has driven the strategy for the Bar and Rod Market Development Group over the years and resulted in an increased demand for steel in the automotive marketplace. He oversaw the development of the Bar Steel Fatigue Database, which is making it easier for automotive engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of steel versus other materials. Under his leadership, we have also seen increased demand for Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement as a long-lasting solution in highway construction.”

Before his retirement in December 2006, Linn Osterman was Vice President Sales and Marketing—Alloy Steel at The Timken Co., serving in that position since 2000. He joined the company in 1967 as an industrial sales engineering trainee, gaining management experience in the sales and engineering fields of the automotive and bearings divisions.
