AISI Lauds Passage of Bill to Fund Highway Trust Fund
07/16/2014 - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) commended the U.S. House of Representatives for approving H.R. 5021, by a vote of 367-55, which provides US$10.8 billion to restore solvency to the Highway Trust Fund through May 2015.
“While we applaud the House of Representatives’ efforts to pass a short-term fix for the Highway Trust Fund, it is imperative that we have a long-term, sustainable funding solution moving forward,” said AISI president and CEO Thomas J. Gibson. “The U.S. steel industry relies on quality infrastructure to move products and raw materials, and without sufficient resources to maintain and upgrade our roads, the steel industry — and manufacturing sector as a whole — is at a great disadvantage against our foreign competitors.”
Gibson said shortfalls in the fund could place 700,000 jobs at risk, according to the Department of Transportation.
