AISI Joins the Metal Initiative

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has joined The Metal Initiative, a coalition of metal construction product manufacturers and suppliers created to communicate the value of metal roofing and siding for commercial building applications.

The Metal Initiative is a coalition of manufacturers, individuals and associations that provide information on the features and benefits of metal in construction.

To meet the varied needs of the owner and the building team, The Metal Initiative addresses virtually all facets of metal in construction — including return on investment, maintenance cost, life cycle cost, environmental impact, recyclability, recycled content, cool roofing, useful life and aesthetics.

The Metal Initiative also seeks to dispel myths that have permeated the construction community regarding the use of metal.

“AISI is pleased to be a part of The Metal Initiative and to support its goal of targeting high-profile builders and owners to help establish the value and long-term benefits of the use of metal in the commercial roofing and wall markets,” said Andrew G. Sharkey, AISI’s President and CEO. “The lack of awareness of significant product advances in durability and coatings has hindered growth in this segment, so we see this as an opportunity. The Metal Initiative will help promote a market-focused strategy by working in partnership with customers in a plan for market growth.”

Robert W. Johns, Director of Marketing, Sheet Mill Group for Nucor Corp. and Chairman of AISI’s Construction Market Committee, said the decision to join The Metal Initiative reflects the industry’s long-term commitment to support steel roofing and siding markets. “Today, more than ever, construction decisions are based on value. We believe that the industry has an obligation to ensure that owners, architects, engineers, contractors and specifiers fully understand the many compelling features and benefits of our products so that they can make informed buying decisions,” he said.

AISI’s Construction Market Committee member companies investing in The Metal Initiative’s information and awareness campaign include:

  • AK Steel Corp.
  • Dofasco Inc.
  • Galvacer Hylsamex Processed Steel
  • Ipsco Inc.
  • Mittal Steel USA
  • Nucor Corp.
  • Severstal North America Inc.
  • Steelscape, Inc.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 32 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 118 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
