“It has been an honor every day to represent the dedicated companies that produce steel in the United States and North America, and to serve as an advocate for steel industry concerns in Washington and beyond,” Gibson said.  

“While I am looking forward to an active retirement, I will certainly miss the talented and dedicated team at AISI and look forward to hearing about AISI’s continued future innovations and successes on behalf of the industry.”

Under Gibson’s leadership, the institute successfully advocated for legislation to strengthen trade laws and level the playing field for steel manufacturers.

In a separate announcement, AISI said it has named a former United States Steel Corporation manager to lead the Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP). 

In his new role as executive director, Michael Davenport will facilitate technical research projects to ensure steel remains in the forefront and the best solution for efficient weight reduction, fuel economy, vehicle range, environmental stewardship and added value to the auto industry.

He succeeds John Catterall, who recently became the vice president of the automotive program for AISI representing steel producer members at the A/SP.

“Mike’s background with several collaborative organizations including WorldAutoSteel’s future mobility programs, as well as his extensive experience with an OEM, a steel-producing company and a stamper, made him the ideal candidate to lead this organization forward,” Catterall said.

Davenport  most recently worked as director of application engineering at U.S. Steel, where he was responsible for leading the product applications department teams that are the single point of contact with automakers and Tier 1 engineering organizations.
