Air Liquide, ArcelorMittal Collaborating on CO2 Reduction Project
03/19/2021 - ArcelorMittal and Air Liquide are teaming up to reduce carbon emissions at the steelmaker’s Dunkirk operation in France.
In a statement, ArcelorMittal said it is prepared to establish a new process route at the site, one that combines direct-reduction ironmaking and a submerged arc furnace. Air Liquide will support the initiative by supplying low-carbon hydrogen to the site and implementing CO2 capture technologies.
Through the project, ArcelorMittal aims to reduce Dunkirk’s annual CO2 emissions by 2.85 million metric tons by 2030.
"This project represents a major technological breakthrough and confirms ArcelorMittal’s willingness to profoundly and sustainably transform our production technologies, in line with our objectives to reduce our CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050," said Geert van Poelvoorde, chief executive of ArcelorMittal Europe.
"The partnership with Air Liquide will enable us to further accelerate the decarbonization of our steel production and contribute to the creation of a low-carbon industrial and port basin."
