AHMSA to Source 400–650,000 Annual Tons of HBI from voestalpine

Beginning in 2016, AHMSA will acquire 400,000 to 650,000 tons of hot briquetted iron (HBI) from voestalpine Texas LLC annually. With estimated value of US$900,000 to US$1.1 million, the agreement has a guaranteed minimum term of 5 years. With the agreement, AHMSA has become the first and biggest trading partner with voestalpine Texas.

The supply agreement was signed in May 2013 with Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine AG, the holding company of the Texas subsidiary, which is building the US$740 million HBI plant in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The HBI will be used in AHMSA’s new EA, which is part of the company’s Fenix Project expansion. It is in the final stages of installing the EAF, which will have a capacity of 1.2 million tons of liquid steel per year.
