AHMSA Investing $980 Million in Mexico
07/10/2012 - Mexican steelmaker Ahmsa and its Minera del Norte unit have started projects in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila that will cost $980 million and create more than 3,000 jobs.
Steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico, or AHMSA, and its Minera del Norte unit have started projects in the northern state of Coahuila that will cost $980 million and create more than 3,000 jobs, the company said.
Minera del Norte's Micare unit has commenced operations at the Mine VII project, which cost $265 million and created 1,050 jobs, AHMSA said.
Development started of Mine IX at Minera del Norte's Mimosa unit in the city of Sabinas, "where 1,650 new jobs will be generated," AHMSA said.
The mine, which required an investment of $620 million, will produce 500,000 tons per month of metallurgical coal for AHMSA's mills once it commences operation, Minera del Norte operations director Jose Duron said.
Development has also started of the Thermal Treatment Center and Vacuum Degasification Plant in Monclova, allowing AHMSA to produce value-added steel for different uses, mainly in the automotive and energy industries, the company said.
