After Nearly a Decade in Mothballs, This EAF is Throwing Sparks Once Again
12/18/2018 - JSW Steel has restarted the meltshop at its Mingo Junction, Ohio, mill, bringing back to life a furnace that has been idled for more than nine years.
“Today, we are making history,” said John Hritz, president and chief executive of JSW USA. “I would like to congratulate the entire Ohio team on this great success. Together, we will be making hundreds of new jobs in Mingo Junction. With the holiday season upon us, we could not be more thrilled to bring this good news to the Mingo Junction community."
The company restarted a Tenova Consteel electric arc furnace (EAF) and cast its first slab on Friday. The company also is looking to build a second EAF in Ohio and one at its Baytown, Texas, plant. It is aiming to produce for 3 million tons of sheet, 1 million tons of plate and 500,000 tons of pipe.
“When all is said and done, JSW USA will be producing the highest quality, lowest cost steel products in the country, whether they’re made in Texas or here in Ohio. This is all about installing the best technology in the world here in the U.S. and creating secure jobs for decades to come in our industry,” Hritz said.
