Aceros Arequipa, Peru, recently achieved top EAF performance with their recently revamped 40-tonne EAF.
The upgraded EAF achieved a 36-minute T.T.T. (equivalent to 40 heats/day), with a 10% increase in productivity, 22% reduction in electrode consumption and electrical energy decrease from 490 to 420 kWh/tonne of good billets. Results were obtained with a charging mix based on 35-40% of DRI content.
For the revamp, Danieli had equipped the EAF with new electrode regulation, a complete automation system, new burnjector and burners (for improving chemical energy utilization). Danieli also supplied a new fume treatment plant for the EAF and LF, as well as comprehensive modernization of the conticaster technological area with new automation system.
With the new burnjector, the EAF door can remain closed during 95% of the process cycle time, facilitating increased slag volume inside the furnace, resulting in higher performances and efficiency.
The EAF revamp was part of the Pisco meltshop upgrade project, which targeted increased production output (to approximately 400,000 tonnes per year) and improved billet quality. The Pisco minimill also includes a 320,000 tonnes per year bar, light sections and wire rod mill, which was upgraded by Danieli in 2002 and completed in 2004 with the installation of a Danieli high-speed wire rod line.
