ABS Starts Highly Automated Wire Rod Mill
06/10/2021 - Acciaierie Bertoli Safau, the steelmaking arm of Danieli, has inaugurated a new, 500,000-metric-ton wire rod mill in Udine, Italy.
The mill is built on Danieli’s QWR 4.0 concept, which relies extensively on automation and remote operation.
“During production and size changes, all mill activities are automatically performed thanks to a strong automation control which makes it possible to have no operators on the field,” Danieli said.
“The implemented technologies allow the minimization of processing costs, such as energy consumption, section-changing time and personnel by fully applying the concepts of Industry 4.0, which also improve operator and operational safety. Only 14 operators are required for each shift.”
Danieli said an automatic quick-change system allows size changes to be done in eight minutes, boosting mill utilization.
The mill includes a number of other features, such as a Danieli Centro Combustion low-scale, energy-efficient walking beam furnace; an energy-efficient Q-Heat induction heater; and an automated in-line heat treatment setup.
The mill will produce wire rod in diameters ranging from 5 mm to 25 mm at finishing speeds of up to 400 km/h.
