ABS Becomes Reference for New Danieli Scrap System
04/21/2021 - Danieli’s steelmaking division, Acciaierie Bertoli Safau, is investing in a new Danieli technology that automatically sorts and processes scrap before it is charged into a furnace.
In a statement, Danieli said the patented system, Danieli Scrap to Melt, is designed to reduce operating costs and CO2 emissions. It integrates three scrap processing steps — densification, cleaning and chemical control — making it possible to separate processed scrap into batches that are based on meltshop chemical composition requirements.
“The production cycle is automatic and continuous, and no operator control is required after charging of the scrap, ensuring high performances and reliability,” Danieli said in a statement.
Danieli said that in the first step, scrap is sheared and shredded to achieve a desired charge density. Then it is cleaned and sorted using an in-line vibrating conveyor and drum magnets.
“In the final step, to control the furnace charge chemistry, the Danieli Analyzer detects the chemical concentration of (metals) like copper, nickel, chromium and manganese, and integrates the feedback to categorize the scrap by its chemical concentration, thereby improving melting efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions,” Danieli said.
