ABB to Upgrade Drive System at Swedish Mill
06/05/2020 - ABB has won a US$2.5 million order for a new drive system to be installed at a Swedish blooming mill, the electrification, motion and industrial automation specialist has announced.
According to ABB, the order from the Kanthal Group’s Hallstahammar facility includes the motor, frequency converter, transformer and controls. The scope also includes installation of a 70-ton gearbox.
ABB said it will manage the project from end to end.
“This includes removal of an existing DC motor and drive system, in place since the 1950s, and installation of a modern AC design. The scope also covers all electrical and mechanical mounting, concrete work, commissioning, and equipment testing,” it said.
Kanthal project manager Anders Björkroth said the project is important investment for the mill.
“Any interruption due to problems with the blooming mill can halt our entire production, so this significant investment is crucial to minimize business risk for the future,” he said. “Replacing the existing DC motor with the latest AC design ensures a reliable, efficient and stable platform for our rolling operations.”
